Jason Reynard, Regional Managing Director — East Africa, discusses AGL’s sustainability initiatives and the development of his organisation’s key partnership with Diageo.

“Sustainability is not a siloed initiative; it is rooted in the heart of everything we do.”

To Africa Global Logistics (AGL) Kenya, there is nothing more important than doing right by the planet.

And with good reason.

Standing as the continent’s largest integrated logistics provider with a presence in 47 African countries, AGL serves as a vital gateway into East and Central Africa, connecting businesses, communities, and markets through agile multimodal solutions. Across the region, AGL’s services span freight forwarding, customs clearance, contract logistics, warehousing, inland transport, shipping, dry port and port operations.

Today, Jason Reynard is responsible for the East African region which stretches from the source of the Nile to the Nile Delta, including the likes of: Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Sudan, Somalia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Djibouti, and Egypt. During his time with the company, AGL has established a number of sustainability strategies across the region which are at the core of the company’s mantra. “We are especially proud of our commitment to sustainable logistics,” explains Reynard. “In Mombasa, we operate East Africa’s first Green Terminal under the Mombasa Container Terminal (MCT). While in Uganda, we recently broke ground on a fully solar-powered Green Logistics Hub in Namanve, a €10 million investment and bolstered our fleet with 50 new trucks, a reach stacker, and an empty container handler to enhance operational capacity.

“In Kenya, we have introduced biodiesel for our fleet, and we are increasing the use of SGR rail network to reduce carbon emissions across our inland logistics. We are also transforming our energy supply to solar and converting our forklifts from LPG to electric. As a leading global logistics player, we aim to support positive change in Africa by developing human capital and value chains, while promoting initiatives that protect the planet.”

However, success is impossible to achieve without the help of key, strategic partnerships. Fortunately, AGL has found one such relationship with Diageo formed of mutual trust, shared values, safety, operational excellence, innovation and sustainability. “We manage critical aspects of Diageo’s supply chain in Kenya and the region, including warehousing, inventory management, and outbound logistics,” says Reynard. “But beyond service delivery, this relationship is strategic and deeply collaborative. Together, we co-develop innovative solutions and drive continuous improvement.

“Working with a global company like Diageo — renowned for its strong brand and operational excellence – has also elevated AGL’s expertise in the FMCG sector. Diageo’s leading sustainability and diversity programs have further inspired us. We’ve been able to match their ambition with our own efforts, gaining traction in our social responsibility agenda.

“Perhaps most importantly, the partnership has sharpened our appetite for innovation. Diageo is a global giant in innovation, and their forward-thinking culture has challenged and motivated us to stay bold, and future focused.”

Looking ahead, the future for AGL is heading in the right direction. Reynard reveals the organisation has established a clear five year strategy for the development in Africa, with more than 90 capital investment projects across the continent anticipated to accelerate growth to the region. “The EAREG region remains a vital part of this strategy and we are investing accordingly, with initiatives like the AGL Special Economic Zone (SEZ) a new Logistics Hub in Nairobi, to double our storage footprint in Kenya, the digitisation of key trade corridors, a fully solar-powered Green Logistics Hub in Namanve, Uganda and several other strategic projects across East Africa to anticipate and meet our customers’ evolving needs such as the launch a new product Vendor Managed Inventory Services (VMI) under our latest brand Supply Chain Alliance Africa (SCA).

“We are also deepening our commitment to green logistics and nurturing local talent. As Africa’s logistics landscape changes, AGL is well-positioned to lead the next chapter of growth, market integration, and innovation.”
